The Cunningham Park baseball fields consist of three state-of-the-art baseball and softball fields serving a wide range of Milton residents. Since these fields have been the setting for games at many levels of competition and have provided so many baseball enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy our national pastime.
The Burgin Park little league field, named after a longstanding Cunningham Park Board Chair in recognition of his years of dedicated service, is located behind Cunningham Hall and is the home field for Milton’s American League.
The softball field, adjacent to Edge Hill Road, is the home of the Milton Girls Softball League, the Fontbonne Academy Girls softball team and the infamous Sunday morning Yaz League which has been in existence for close to 50 years.
The diamond adjacent to the softball field is the home of Milton High School’s baseball team, Milton Babe Ruth, Milton American Legion, Milton Adult Baseball League and the Al Thomas Senior Baseball League.
If you are bringing the family dog along, the best pathway is the woodlands at the rear of the park. Take the “back road”, which runs behind the upper baseball fields (to the left or east of the main entrance to the park), to the point where it turns sharply to the right, where you can park on the left side of the road. Parking is also available near the (red) Cunningham Barn. From here you will find a small network of interconnecting trails that extend close to our border with Quincy on one side and Fullers Lane on the other. This is the ONLY area in Cunningham Park where dogs can run free and off-leash. Accompanying toddlers may be happier in a stroller or backpack.
Starting in the main parking area beside Cunningham Hall, there are a number of accessible routes around the park. You can park at the main lot next to Cunningham Hall and follow any of these measured routes ranging from ¼ to a full measured mile (see plan below) or blaze your own path! With the exception of “The Woods” trail above, all routes are paved and provide an easy walk in the park!
Designed by Studio MLA Architects and opened in 2020, the park’s new playground for Milton’s youngest community members, provides a natural space for safe and imaginative play by toddlers. The Play Garden welcomes visitors to an area with picnic tables under a cedar trellis. This area is surrounded by various features, including a “Ladybug House”, small twin slides built into the hill, an area for sand play, a “Willow Hut” and toddler-safe swings. The large “Spider Structure” was first installed at Cunningham Park over 50 years ago and has been restored for the new play area.
The stonedust path around the perimeter leads to a larger slide that is also built into the hill, where large swings for all ages can also be found. The Play Garden is dedicated to Dr. Anne Coghlan, a life-long Milton citizen, educator and committed community leader for over five decades until her passing in 2012.
Originally created as a Victory Garden after World War II, the Community Garden at Cunningham Park offers space for 75 Milton families to plant and harvest their own crops each year. The garden is located on Edge Hill Road just east of the baseball fields; an area that some may remember as Baxter’s Hill. Gardeners are responsible for planting, watering, and weeding their own plots, and encouraged to donate any extra produce to local food pantries and community fridges. The Community Garden is a vibrant group of Milton neighbors who are committed to growing organically, and love to share gardening advice along with extra zucchini! For any general questions about the community garden please email us!

Within Cunningham Park there are dozens of lovely spots for a family picnic. Picnic tables can be found inside the new Coghlan Play Garden and in the nearby field. Or bring a blanket and find your own shady spot next to a ball field or beside the Pond.
In collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass, Cunningham Park maintains two girl scout facilities in the back of the park adjacent to “Girl Scout Ave.” These facilities are used by local girl scout troops and the Milton Park and Recreation summer camps. For more information, please contact the Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass at 844-306-4736 or Milton Town Hall at 617-898-4800.
One of the more unique features offered by this 100-acre gem which is Cunningham Park is the meadow in the rear of the park. A quiet brook runs through the meadow and each winter, the meadow is flooded, and with the help of mother nature the field is transformed into a large outdoor ice-skating rink.
Many Milton residents have learned to skate, play hockey and enjoy all that a cold winter day in New England has to offer on this natural ice rink.
Did you know that the swimming pond at Cunningham Park is over 40,000 square feet and holds more than 800,000 of spring fed water!
